Gardeners in Haworth are being urged to spruce up their premises to brighten up the village.

Organisers of Haworth in Bloom are running three competitions again this summer but have made slight changes to attract more entrants.

The team is offering cash prizes to businesses, homeowners and children in a variety of contests.

The pub front competition has been expanded to include all businesses, including shops, hotels and offices within Haworth.

A £100 prize and trophy, sponsored by Mark Loftus of West Yorkshire Conservatory, is up for grabs for the lucky winner.

Committee member Joseph Thorpe said: "This will hopefully encourage the businesses to make a big effort and therefore help our chances in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition when the judges come in July."

The garden of the year competition, sponsored by Sun Street Stores, has a first prize of £50 and a trophy for the winner, with second and third prizes of £25 and £10.

Joseph said: "This year as well as people entering their own garden, we are asking people to nominate a garden that they think deserves the award."

Closing date for entries is June 30. To enter or nominate another garden, contact Joseph on 647496.

Schoolchildren are again being asked to grow the tallest sunflower.

The winner will be presented with the challenge cup and prize at the annual flower and vegetable show on August 21.

Entries should be phoned to Joseph by August 19.
