A Bradford band which found itself without a lead singer just days before an appearance at the Glastonbury Festival has found a vocalist at the eleventh hour.

Los Guys, a Latin-influenced dance funk band, made an urgent appeal for a female singer to perform at its biggest gig yet.

Singer Martha Kean left the band because she is pregnant so the search was on for a new female vocalist.

The band, which releases its single Gettin Down with the Fungus Mungus this week, held auditions at the weekend in Bradford and picked 21-year-old Philippa Hanna from Wakefield as the singer.

"Eighteen people came along and they were all good but Philippa's vocals were stunning," said songwriter Jim Henderson.

"When we listened to the tapes afterward, and to her demo, we were blown away. She's a dream come true! She's done some session work for Leeds-based Player Records."

Los Guys are known for flamboyant performances, with band members dressed as Mexican bandits, and Jim said Philippa had the "right sense of energy and fun".

She will join the band at the UK's biggest music festival, appearing alongside such acts as Coldplay, the White Stripes, Van Morrison, the Kaiser Chiefs and Doves.

"We only formed just over a year ago so getting signed for Glastonbury is fantastic," said Jim. "Philippa has joined us in Bradford for a quick turnaround of rehearsals before the festival and she'll be making her debut at our pre-Glastonbury gig at Jumpin' Jaks tomorrow night."

The band, who are all from Bradford, knew each other from playing in other local bands such as Dream State Circus, Indiqa and Reefer.

Their trademark look is sombreros, ponchos and big curly wigs.

"The Mexican theme started when we were invited to play at a fancy dress party, we all went as Mexican bandits and people loved it," said Jim. "It took off from there. Our gigs are a lot of fun, everyone is up dancing getting into the spirit."

The band members have names like Cheesy Natchos, Chilli Beef, Tequila Mockingbird, Senior Sax and Fernando Fandango and their debut album is called La Nochi de San Juan, after the Nights of St John festival, which takes place in Spain. Last year the band was voted Best Unsigned Band of 2004 at the MP3Unsigned.com music awards and it has featured on Radio 1's unsigned play list. "We were chosen from thousands of entries and we got played daily on Radio 1, which was great exposure," said Jim. "Last year we toured Europe and headlined the High Times Cup at the Melkweg (Milkyway) festival in Amsterdam. We're touring Europe later this year and it would be fantastic to take our Latin style over to Spain and Portugal."
