PRINCE Henry's Grammar School could be in line for a new multi-million pound windfall.

Leeds City Council has put in a bid for £6 million to help the Otley school create a new science block and make other improvements to improve access for the community.

Otley's three ward councillors have all thrown their support behind the application, which is currently being considered by the Department for Education and Skills.

Councillor Ryk Downes (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) said: "My ward colleagues and I fully support this bid.

"Prince Henry's is a school that has unfortunately been neglected for far too long and we have been lobbying hard for extra funding.

"Whilst we are aware that the bidding process is highly competitive, we are hopeful that the government will give Prince Henry's the green light."

The outcome of the bid is expected to be announced in September and, if successful, the funds would be available from April, 2006.

The estimated total scheme cost is £8.8m, which includes an anticipated capital receipt of £1.6m (from the sale of the former Newall Primary School annexe), Local Education Authority formulaic funding of £1.2m and Target Capital Funding of £6m.

As well as creating new science, technology and general teaching facilities, the scheme would provide a new main entrance to enable easier access for people using the school's language college and sporting facilities.

With the creation of additional working spaces, multi-agency teams in the fields of social services, education welfare and health advisory would also be able to be accommodated at the school.
