PEOPLE turned out in their hundreds to make Saturday's Askwith Show a great success.

Young and old villagers, entrants and others from all across the area took part in a range of competitions and enjoyed numerous side shows and entertainment.

New secretary Victoria Middlemiss, who took over this year from Adele Marston, said she was delighted with the way the day had gone.

"It was a fantastic day and could have been a record turn out. As the weather improved people began to flood in and were still arriving well into the afternoon."

New for this year was a scarecrow display made by children from Askwith Community Primary School and Happy Days Pre School in Otley.

Mrs Middlemiss said: "One little boy, Jed Morris dressed as a scarecrow, missed the fancy dress, and stood instead amongst the scarecrows with his arms outstretched, he ended up the most popular scarecrow."

All sections, handicrafts, produce and sheep were well entered with entry into the dry stone walling competition higher than in previous years.

Shannon English dressed as a tiger won the children's fancy dress competition, while Jessica Tomkinson with her rabbit, Billy, beat Jack Smith with Mojo the goat into first place in the pet section.

Entries for the Companion Dog Show were high, with entry fees donated to the Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Mrs Middlemiss said: "I would like to thank the former secretary Adele Marston for helping me out and for everyone who helped out on show day, before and afterwards, the judges, stewards, St John Ambulance and the Women's Institute for providing the lovely food, drinks, stall holder and for everyone who attended.

"It was all of them who made the day a success."
