New Yorkshire under-16 golf champion Sam Jewell is aiming for the stars.

The 15-year-old Bradford Golf Club (Hawksworth) member wants to be a tournament professional. Sam, from Burley Woodhead, plays off three and captured his title with a marvellous second-round 72 at windy Driffield.

"I was three under par at one point but I had a bad first round," said the Menston St Mary's schoolboy.

"I got away with it. They were tough conditions and my driving was all over the place in the first round. Driving is usually the best part of my game."

Sam often uses his father Paul, the former Bradford City and current Wigan manager as his caddy. In fact Paul was carrying out that role when Sam made his debut for the Bradford Union team in the Yorkshire Inter-District Union League game against Harrogate at Knaresborough where he lost 8 and 6 to Henry Flather.

Sam said: "I try to practise nearly every day. I would like to make it as a professional but I know it is a tough ask."

Sam also competed in the Bradford Boys' U-18 Championship at Baildon won by his fellow St Mary's pupil Oliver Young from Menston.

Sam shared third place with Oliver's older brother Patrick in this championship.

Oliver shot an amazing 66 around the breezy Baildon course to become champion. The 15 year-old plays out of the Northcliffe club.

He plays off a handicap of five.

Oliver's next objective is the Faldo Series with the final round at Woodhall Spa with Oliver half a point behind the leader. The winner gets to play Nick Faldo.
