Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson the world's most successful paralympic athlete presented the annual Jamie Payne-Ross award at St Mary's RC School, Menston. The recipient was talented young soccer player Aiden White.

The award is presented annually at the school in memory of Jamie Payne-Ross who died in a tragic accident at his home in December 1993. The award is for outstanding achievement in sport by a Year 8 boy (12-13 years-old) and was presented to the school by Jamie's mother Colleen and his elder brother Adam.

The recipient Aiden White is an outstanding games player who excels in football and rugby. Aiden is a member of the Leeds United FC Academy.

Martin Green, Head of Physical Education at the school, praised Aiden for his achievements over the past two years.

He said: "It is always a difficult task to choose just one person for this award when so many youngsters are achieving so much. Aiden is not only exceptionally good at sport but he continually works so hard to improve his level of performance.

"Aiden also demonstrates excellent leadership qualities and is always keen to help others. Aiden is a very promising footballer and is doing very well with Leeds United. He is a most respected pupil and indeed a worthy recipient of this prestigious award."

Previous presenters of the Award include international athletics coach Wilf Paish, former world record holder and Olympic gold medallist Adrian Moorhouse and Trevor Brooking former Chairman of Sport England.

At the special assembly at the school Dame Tanni presented the school with the prestigious Sports Mark Gold Award.

The Sportsmark Gold Award is in national recognition of the school's outstanding commitment to Physical Education and Sport.

Following the assembly Dame Tanni met members of the school's community sport club for disabled children.
