There must be many older readers able either to verify or correct my deduction as to the identity of this pre-war group in Becks Road.

At the time of the 1937 Coronation, residents swathed Back Aireworth Street in a "profusion of bunting, streamers, pennants, balloons, and every conceivable type of red, white, and blue decoration".

Thousands came from all over town to view it, and a Keighley Coronation Committee awarded the street a £3 prize, which was added to a fund for treating neighbourhood children to a trip to Bridlington.

In those days it was customary to photograph coach parties before leaving, and what more convenient place for this than Becks Road, just across Oakworth Road from Back Aireworth Street? Do the badges worn by most children have any bearing on the Coronation?

Of special interest is the background of the then-recent Westgate clearance area on the site now occupied by the Royal Mail's Keighley Delivery Office. Remnants of the demolished houses on the left can still be seen among the present trees below West Lane.

The photograph was supplied by Mr H Greenwood, of Merlin Court, Keighley.
