Bradford Bulls stars have joined forces with the police to educate teachers on how to spot youngsters who have fallen into alcohol or drug abuse.

Teachers from every school in the district were invited to take part in an event in Bradford yesterday designed to raise their awareness of the dangers of pupils becoming addicts.

The information day at the Bulls' Odsal Stadium was organised by West Yorkshire Police and youth research company Dubit.

During the day, teachers attended workshops to learn more about how to identify signs of drinking and drug-taking and how to encourage youngsters to avoid alcohol and drugs.

Bradford Bulls players provided teachers with tips on how to lead a healthy lifestyle and Dubit gave a presentation on why children can get involved in alcohol.

West Yorkshire Police drugs co-ordinator Bryan Dent said: "Teachers work in such close proximity with children on a daily basis that their understanding of drugs issues is vital. They could be the early influence that diverts kids away from drugs before they succumb to curiosity and pressure. For this reason we want to provide them with as much support as possible.

"That's what yesterday's event was all about: the more informed the teachers are, the more help they can offer pupils."

Chris Rostron, Bradford Bulls' community development manager, said he hoped the players' high profile would help to get the message across to young people on the importance of keeping fit and steering clear of drugs

He said: "Drug misuse continues to be one of the most difficult issues faced in society today. One of the key measures in tackling the problem is education.

"We welcome the opportunity to support this project because it is well documented that sport can have a very positive effect and influence on young people.

"We hope that by using the profile of our players to reinforce positive lifestyle messages that more young people make the right choice in their lives."
