BRIAN NORTHING held on to a top six place after 130-miles of tough racing in the Annual Angel of the North two day stage race.

Northing, who rides for team Stephen Roche, took fifth place in the 4-mile prologue time trial just 33 seconds behind the winner Ron Pyne of Rockingham Cycle Club.

All the leading contenders finished together at the end of the afternoon's 58-mile stage.

With everything to go for on the final 68-mile stage, which included two climbs of the 1:5 Ryals hill, a leading group of 16 formed early in the stage. The group stayed clear to the finish, with Northing retaining his overnight position of fifth overall behind Londoner Tony Woodcock of Glendene CC.

n World track championship gold medallist Chris Newton returns to Yorkshire for the Chevin Cycles Otley Town Centre race on Wednesday, together with his world team persuit medallist team mates.

Racing gets underway at 7pm with other top names including Russell Downing, currently the best road rider in the country, defending his series lead, and former Tour of Spain points winner Malcolm Elliott.
