Two crematoria will close while they are given multi-thousand pound makeovers.

Bradford Council's bereavement service is spending £450,000 revamping facilities at Oakworth and Scholemoor.

At Oakworth the reception will be extended and enclosed and the waiting area and toilets refurbished.

Scholemoor 's upgrade will feature an undercover reception area for hearses and limousines and an undercover viewing area for floral tributes.

But the scale of the work means both crematoria will have to be temporarily closed.

Oakworth Crematorium will close from Monday, June 20 until Friday, July 15 and then every Monday and Tuesday until the end of August. Services have been arranged to take place at Nab Wood Crematorium.

Work will start at Scholemoor Crematorium on Monday, July 11 until the end of September but it will only close on Mondays and Tuesdays. The crematorium will be fully functioning on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

David Talbot, head of parks and landscape services, said: "We are very sorry for any inconvenience to bereaved families but we do need to improve these facilities.

"We have endeavoured to keep disruption to a minimum and crematorium staff will, as ever, make every effort to ensure that the service runs smoothly at all times.

"Work at Oakworth will involve creating an internal waiting room and access to the toilets from inside the building. Scholemoor improvements will include an undercover waiting area for hearses and limousines and an undercover viewing area for floral tributes."

Coun Simon Cooke, Bradford Council's executive member for regeneration, said: "The improvements will greatly enhance the existing facilities at both Oakworth and Scholemoor Crematoria."
