Residents will be consulted on proposals to restore a disused quarry used by off-road bikers back to its original moorland state.

Planning consultants The Mineral Planning Group will hold a public meeting on Friday to display their plans for Hallas Rough quarry in Cullingworth.

Mineral planner Jessica Morgan said: “We do this to gauge public interest and if they have any suggestions or ideas we can incorporate.

“Our proposal is to restore the land back to moorland.”

She said there was a condition on the planning permission to turn the land into a quarry that the owner restore it afterwards.

Bradford Council closed a lay-by to bikers riding in the quarry in June on health and safety grounds after a 45-year-old man died when his quad bike flipped over in one of a series of accidents at the site.

Miss Morgan said: “We drive past it regularly to check on it and the bikers are still getting on the site. It’s sitting there doing nothing at the moment.

“We tried to do a low-level restoration before but every time planting was put in place it was ripped up by bikes.

“We want to restore it with infill of inert material, anything like bricks, that can’t be broken down.

“Now it has dips and looks like a quarry, we want to bring it back to its original level, with moorland planting such as heather.

“We want people to be able to walk across it.

“Local people tend to know more about the site and what use they could get out of it so it’s interesting to get their thoughts.”

A planning application is expected to be put to Bradford Council after Christmas.

The meeting will be at Cullingworth Methodist Church Hall, Dell Side Fold, Cullingworth, on Friday from 2pm to 6pm.
