Police have vowed to remove guns from the streets of Bradford after a drive-by shooting near the city centre.

The shots were believed to have come from a shotgun fired from a maroon Mitsubishi Shogun 4x4 at a group of Asian males in Grosvenor Road, Manningham, as they stood close to its junction with Lumb Lane at about 1am today.

Police cordoned off the scene while they spoke to witnesses to try to establish a motive behind the shooting.

Police do not believe anyone was injured but some vehicles parked nearby were damaged.

Detective Inspector Steve Snow, of Bradford South CID, said: “We believe two shots have been discharged and we have found evidence to support our theory that a shotgun was used.

“As a result of inquiries it has been established there has been some form of altercation or disturbance involving an unknown group of Asian males and occupants of the Mitsubishi Shogun.”

The car was seen driving towards Lumb Lane.

Det Insp Snow said: “There is a dedicated team of officers looking into this and we want to reassure people we treat incidents like this very seriously.

“We are doing all we can and we work hard and tirelessly to remove guns from Bradford.”

Councillor Mohammad Amin (Lab, Manningham) said: “Nobody can afford for any incident like this to happen, it is degrading society, the community and the city.

“We have been working hard to bring this city back.

“I don’t understand what is going on in the city and why this is happening. I have my full faith in the police force and will fully support them in keeping the city stable and peaceful.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information about it should contact Det Insp Snow at Bradford South CID on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
