Over the past year, the property sector has had more than its fair share of reasons to be down in the dumps.

Schemes have stopped, stalled or not even started. Some businesses have failed and the industry has been hit by redundancies and recession worse than anything in most people’s living memory.

Against this backdrop, one could be forgiven for being sceptical or even cynical, but that gets us nowhere.

My grandmother had a lovely expression that is “It’s a hard life if you don’t weaken, but an even harder one if you do”.

So let’s say ‘good riddance’ to 2009 and bring on 2010, and let’s make a difference.

Let’s build more cleverly, work harder, support those out of work and those in work. Let’s work together, and by that I mean all aspects of our industry – from bankers to planners, builders, valuers and all the other professionals involved. We can make a difference.

I also want to thank all those on the Bradford Property Forum who give up their time voluntarily to try and enhance our built environment, and to the Chamber of Commerce, who are tireless in trying to support businesses.

Thanks also to the Telegraph & Argus for printing these pieces, and to all our members who regularly support our events.

And a special thanks to my team for allowing me the time to do other things.

I genuinely wish all my readers a Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
