More than 3,400 people have joined a group campaigning for a late-night train service along the Airedale line from Leeds to Skipton.

A page dedicated to the campaign was set up on the popular social networking site Facebook more than a year ago and has received a tremendous response.

Martin Chalk, of Bingley, started the campaign following a night out in Leeds, when he had to leave the concert early to catch the last train home. Currently, the last train back to Skipton leaves Leeds at 11.18pm on Saturdays.

Campaigners want two late-night weekend services returning from Leeds to Skipton at 1.30am and 3am.

Later trains along the line are also among the long-term objectives of the Aire Valley Rail Users Group.

Last month the Telegraph & Argus revealed how transport chiefs were exploring the possibility of a late-night bus service between Bradford and Leeds to operate when the trains stop running.
