Women from ethnic minorities will be encouraged to become involved in politics at an event being held in Bradford this week.

The Government Equalities Office will host the free roadshow to encourage black, Asian and minority ethnic women to become councillors.

The event had originally been organised for June but has now been rescheduled for this Wednesday at City Hall from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Out of 90 Bradford councillors, only four are females from an ethnic minority, despite the district’s black, Asian and minority ethnic population of 101,624.

Speakers at the event will include Councillor Dale Smith, the deputy leader of Bradford Council, Adeeba Malik, chief executive of Bradford-based Quest for Economic Development, UK, and Councillor Naveeda Ikram, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, who was the first British Pakistani woman to be elected to the Council when she won her seat in 2004.
