A major blaze ripped through the roof of a sports pavilion near an army barracks today.

More than 20 firefighters spent almost five hours at the scene after the fire broke out at Woodhall Park, in Woodhall Lane.

At its peak, smoke could be seen rising 30ft into the air from the roof of the two-storey building near Thornbury Barracks, home to the 2387 (Pudsey) Squadron of the Air Training Corps.

A local resident called the emergency services at 4.43pm as the blaze started to spread through the sports building.

Four fire engines, two from Stanningley and two from Bradford used an aerial ladder, a hydraulic platform and two large jets to get to the flames.

The cause of the fire is being investigated but it is believed to have started in a roof void.

The playing fields and the sports pavilion are understood to be owned by Bradford University.
