Scores of knickers were just some of the rubbish retrieved in a giant litter pick at the weekend as Bolton Abbey gears up for its main visitor season.

The estate’s owner, the Duke of Devonshire, donned a fluorescent jacket and led the clean-up of roads and pathsn.

The estate’s team cleared a total of eighteen and a half miles of roadside verges and filled 219 bin liners.

Bolton Abbey visitor manager Moira Smith said: “There were endless pairs of knickers and the most popular brands found littering the roadside were Coke tins, Walkers crisps and Fosters lager. We also found 17 tyres and even a TV set with integrated video.

“Naturally the litter sweep boosts the overall appearance of Bolton Abbey but more importantly it brings endless benefits to wildlife and the environment.”

Janet Smith, who organised the litter-sweep said there had been a noticeable increase in the amount of fly tipping over recent years.
