The creation of a specialist science and sport academy in Wyke, Bradford, has moved a step closer after no objections to the proposal were received during a consultation period.

Wyke Manor School will be closed as well as High Fernley Primary School from August to allow the academy to open.

If given final approval by Bradford Council’s executive and Education Secretary Ed Balls, it will open in existing buildings at the Wyke Manor site in 2009 before moving into new accommodation by 2011.

The next step will see the Council’s executive asked to sanction the closure of the High Fernley and Wyke sites when it meets on Monday.

Councillor Michael Kelly said: “This is another step towards the creation of a top notch new learning centre for the people of Wyke. There is still a great deal of work to do to prepare for the academy, but I am confident that things are progressing well.”
