The first Local Nature Reserve in the Bradford district was officially opened on Saturday in Low Moor, Bradford.

The Raw Nook site at Railway Terrace comprises a wildflower meadow, grassland, a pond, oak and birch woodland and heathland.

It is managed by the Conservation Management Centre (CMC) based at Forster Community College on behalf of Bradford Council’s countryside and rights of way service.

CMC volunteers have spent four years improving the footpaths and cutting back trees.

The habitat has recorded 65 species of birds either breeding or passing through on migration, 19 species of butterfly and eight species of dragonfly.

A 1949 Act gives local authorities powers to declare areas as Local Nature Reserves. Speaking at the opening ceremony Sheila Philpott, chief executive officer of Forster Community College said: “I’m honoured to work with people who share a passion and vision for this place. All of this would not have been possible without goodwill and commitment.”
