A band of Bradford archaeologists are competing to get their Viking dig on television.

The Bradford University-led team has been working on a site on the Shetland island of Unst.

It needs public votes to grab £2,000 of cash and a chance to feature in a prime-time programme on BBC1.

The project has reached the semi-finals of The National Lottery Awards 2008 and hopes to get enough votes to beat nine other teams to the prize in the Best Heritage Project category.

The three projects in each category with the highest number of votes will go through to the finals of the awards and appear on a Saturday night TV show later in the year.

Dr Julie Bond, senior lecturer in archaeology at the university and project field director, said: “The project aims to play a key role in representing Shetland’s culture and heritage as well as attracting visitors to the island of Unst – creating jobs and benefiting local businesses from increased tourism. ”

Public voting for the semi-finals ends at noon on Friday, July 4. To vote for Viking Unst call 0845 3861416 or visit lottery goodcauses.org.uk/awards.
