A Bradford nightclub which was closed down for a month after the death of a teenager looks set to change the conditions attached to its licence.

It was after a rave night at The Mill, in Thornton Road, in July last year that 19-year-old Andrew Hook died. He collapsed outside the club after taking ecstasy.

Following an investigation into his death, the police called for a review of the venue’s licence. A decision was made last month to close the club down last month and Bradford Licensing Panel added a set of stringent conditions.

These included:

  • a minimum of ten registered doorstaff at all events
  • installing an enhanced CCTV system
  • that police be notified of any events seven days in advance
  • having a maximum of 360 people at any event.

The club initially appealed to the magistrates’ court over the doorstaff condition as they said they sometimes had smaller events when fewer doorstaff would be required.

The licensing panel agreed to allow Suzan Hemingway, Bradford Council’s city solicitor, to negotiate with the club owner Alan Briggs about the possibility of making the number of doorstaff proportional to the number of people – such as four door staff for events with up to 100 people.
