An ancient church is looking for more friends to take it into the 21st century.

Calverley Parish Church has been a feature of the village since 1154 but big bills to pay for its upkeep means it needs help to adapt to modern-day demands.

At the moment, a core of worshippers are doing their best to maintain St Wilfrid’s and its churchyard, but to keep serving the needs of the community and generations to come vicar the Reverend John Walker says a group is needed.

The Friends of Calverley Parish Church will be officially launched at Calverley Carnival on Saturday, June 28.

As well as raising funds to pay for general work to keep the church in shape, there are also plans to make a new pathway leading from it to The Barn where parish events are held.

People joining the new group will be invited to go along to regular events to support fundraising and help the church reach out more into the community.

A one-off donation is one way people can help, and offers of time and skills will be just as welcome, says the Rev Walker.
