Chef Steph Moon has been appearing on the pages of Yorkshire Life for, dare we say it, decades? We unearthed these archive pictures of her from the magazine in 2011 and 2015 ‒ debating the merits of drinking beer with a meal ‒ and whether apple pie or apple crumble was the best.

So Steph’s career in food ‒ Yorkshire food in particular ‒ and her link with our magazine made her the obvious person to devise a menu for The Great Yorkshire Feast, which is happening at Fodder, Harrogate, on September 25.

But we also asked Steph to share her Yorkshire memories...

A person you consider a Yorkshire icon?

So many Yorkshire icons but from a food perspective it must be Marco Pierre White – what an inspiration and real visionary and innovator. He really helped to change food in Yorkshire and the UK and made cooking very cool!

A favourite Yorkshire place?

Nothing quite beats that feeling of being at home walking the dog and relaxing and enjoying your surroundings. Last year we did an epic trip in our camper van initially across Europe for three months and then shipped our van from Liverpool to Nova Scotia and drove for eight and a half months across Canada, USA and up to Alaska ‒ so spectacular ‒ but nothing quite beats the green grass of home! I feel very happy here.

A memory of Yorkshire Life over the past 80 years?

Yorkshire Life magazine has been so good to me over the years with some great food write-ups, including a super one for a grouse dish I cooked at Coniston Hotel when I was head chef there.

Then onto Rudding Park where I started as head chef of the Clocktower. We hosted a Yorkshire Life lunch ‒ one of my first big events there. I can recall the menu even now: canapés on the lawn and lunch was tomato assiette, half a lobster salad for main course and pink champagne ice cream fruit tuille baskets for pudding.

Back in 2004 I won Yorkshire Life Chef of the Year as executive chef at Rudding Park ‒ a thrilling evening and honour for me.

I have been lucky to have been featured doing many cooking events and this is the big one coming up ‒ I am so happy to have been asked to cook for the Yorkshire Life 80th anniversary celebrations. I cannot wait.

An anniversary message to us?

Happy anniversary, Yorkshire Life ‒ full of memories, fun, food and fabulousness. Here’s to 80 more!.
