A senior Calderdale councillor is backing a famous Halifax’s nightclub’s bid for a blue plaque.
A legend in the town and further afield, the Acapulco club on Waterhouse Street has been a feature of Halifax’s night life for decades – 65 years in fact.
The club’s fundraising campaign for a blue plaque, which will celebrate its remarkable longevity, has found support from Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services, Coun Peter Hunt.
Coun Hunt (Reform UK, Elland) said on the council’s Facebook page: “For 65 years, Halifax’s legendary Acapulco Club has been at the heart of nightlife in the town.
“Generations of people from Calderdale and beyond have been visiting the iconic nightclub, celebrating music, friendship and shared memories.
“Few venues can say they have brought together grandparents, parents and grandchildren under the same roof.
“It’s part of the town’s modern history and culture and I’m pleased to support its campaign for a blue plaque, recognising its accolade of Britain’s oldest continuous nightclub and its contribution to our much-loved local heritage.”
The GoFundMe campaign has been launched to raise the £650 required, with a target of £700 to cover any additional costs.
Extra funds will be donated to Halifax Street Angels, a charity supporting vulnerable people in the town’s night-time economy, says the club.
