There is a question mark over the future of Calderdale’s ward forums – monthly events where members of the public can quiz councillors, police and others about issues.
Calderdale Council’s new Reform UK administration says changes are being considered.
The issue was raised in the public question section of Calderdale Council Cabinet’s July meeting.
Former councillor Christine Prashad said she was concerned there seemed to be a question mark over the forums. in each area of Calderdale, continuing.
“Ward forums enable residents to meet face to face with both councillors and representatives from the police force for local updates.
“It also allows residents who may not have access to the internet the ability to ask questions about issues which are important to them.
“If ward forums are to be discontinued, can this Cabinet confirm that any replacement will be accessible for all and held at regular intervals?” she asked.
Cabinet member for Public Services, Coun Peter Hunt, said the new administration fully supported the importance of providing a local voice for residents and problem solving at a neighbourhood level.
But there were issues with the current set-up, he said.
Coun Hunt (Reform UK, Elland) said: “Not all ward forums are operating effectively and some may not be delivering value for money, with low levels of attendance at several meetings.”
As a consequence of this, council officers have been asked to review the approach and any recommendations for changes will come back to Cabinet for full consideration later this year, he said.
Leader of the Council, Coun Dan Sutherland (Reform UK, Illingworth and Mixenden) said he thought many councillors would welcome an improved situation.
“I know at least in my ward attendance from the police, for example, has been very patchy – often perhaps with good operational reasons – but an improved situation will certainly improve how we engage with the public and engage them with the wider partnership that’s out there,” he said.
