The OWNER of a boutique is delighted to being crowned the best independent retailer in the Bradford district.
Top Knot, which specialises in women’s clothing and accessories, has won the Telegraph & Argus Best Independent Retailer competition, with owner Jodie Walsh describing the win as “amazing” and a huge boost for her shop on Bradford Road in Idle.
Miss Walsh said: "I was blown away just by appearing in the Top 10.
"But to actually win this is amazing.
"I still can't believe it.
"When you run a business on your own, there are a lot of moments where you doubt yourself, so winning this through customer votes makes it even more special.
"I'm so thankful to everyone who voted for me and supported my business over the years."
Running a business is incredibly challenging
She also praised other businesses on the shortlist, acknowledging the challenges of the current economic climate.
Miss Walsh said: "Also, well done to all the other fantastic nominees.
"Running a business in 2026 is incredibly challenging, especially as independents, so we should all be proud just to be here.
"Don't forget how amazing you are."
Top Knot's story
In March 2020, at the start of the national lockdown, Miss Walsh was made redundant but by October, she had taken the plunge and opened her Bradford Road shop.
How did that come about?
During that lockdown period, a friend had spotted a vacant shop building and encouraged her to take the leap.
Ms Walsh said the friend "encouraged me to take a chance and the rest is history."
Miss Walsh believes that what sets Top Knot apart is its atmosphere and personal touch - and it seems the locals would agree!
The independent clothes shop has become a fixture in the Idle community, known for its friendly approach and supportive environment.
And for Miss Walsh, those connections are at the heart of the business.
She said: "Customers? You mean friends.
"That’s genuinely how it feels.
"It’s important to me that everyone who walks through the door feels welcome, comfortable, and valued.
"It’s what makes Top Knot so special."
