A new electric vehicle charging scheme is improving access to at-home charging.
Bradford Council has begun installing cross-pavement electric vehicle (EV) charging channels outside homes without off-street parking, using the Kerbo Charge system to enable residents to use their domestic electricity supply for convenient EV charging.
The first installations are taking place at properties with reserved parking bays, such as disabled persons’ spaces.
Mrs Newsome, a resident who received one of the new charging channels, said: "My husband and I are both disabled, and we have carers who help us get out and about.
"The new charging channel means that we can safely charge the vehicle outside our home.
"It’s made a real difference, we can charge when we need to, we don’t all have to wait for two hours at a slow public charger, so our carers can concentrate on helping us with more practical things."
The trial follows Bradford Council’s Executive approval of a pilot scheme in August 2025 to improve EV accessibility and could be expanded further based on feedback.
Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, portfolio holder for regeneration, transport and planning, said: "Making EV charge points more accessible for those without a driveway is an essential step in reducing emissions across our district and a key part of our Climate Action Plan.
"By enabling more residents to charge their vehicles at home, we are supporting cleaner transport choices, improving air quality, and helping people save money."
Bradford Council is also participating in the regional LEVI project, which aims to install thousands of EV charging bays across the district.
It has secured £2,874,920 in grant funding for this, to be delivered in three phases alongside private investment.
The Kerbo Charge channels are installed flush with the pavement to ensure pedestrian safety.
Residents simply lay their charging cable inside the channel, and a self-closing lid seals behind it like a zip.
When charging is complete, the cable is removed and the channel closes flat.
The scheme is still open to Bradford district residents without off-street parking.
