A YOUNG teenager is taking on a gruelling challenge in support of a cause close to his heart.

Tyler Starr is tackling a Tough Mudder, an energy-draining obstacle course, in July to raise money for Colostomy UK.

The 13-year-old, from Steeton, was diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s disease when he was just two weeks old.

What is Hirschsprung’s disease?

A rare condition affecting the function of the bowel, it requires surgery in early life.

Since his diagnosis, Tyler – a pupil at South Craven School, Cross Hills – has undergone numerous operations and relied on ongoing medication.

Just before his sixth birthday, it was decided the best option for him would be to have a stoma bag – which is attached to the body to collect waste. He lived with the bag for three years.

"It wasn’t always easy – especially as a young child – but it gave Tyler relief from constant medication and allowed him to keep enjoying life," said his mum, Jemma.

"He now has an ACE (Antegrade Continence Enema) button, which helps him manage his condition and live much more normally.

"Colostomy UK is especially important to Tyler because it supports children and adults facing the same challenges he has experienced.

"And the cause has become even more personal recently, as his uncle has been diagnosed with cancer and now also lives with a stoma.

"Seeing what his uncle has been through has strengthened Tyler’s determination to raise awareness and help others feel less alone."

Tyler aiming to raise £1,000

Despite his health challenges, Tyler leads an active life – he plays football for Sutton Juniors and Fisical.

An online fundraising page has been set up, at justgiving.com/page/tyler-starr12, which has so far coined-in over £700. The target is £1,000.

Jemma added: "Tyler hopes the money will help Colostomy UK continue supporting families, children and adults navigating life with a stoma. Any support from the local community would mean the world to him."

Charity is 'really important' to youngster

Tyler said: "Hirschsprung’s disease means babies need serious surgery very early in life.

"I’ve had lots of operations and medication growing up.

"I had the stoma bag for three years; it helped me keep going and gave me a break from all the medication.

"Colostomy UK is really important to me, and I’m doing this Tough Mudder to raise money so it can keep helping kids and adults feel supported."
