A new project hopes to future-proof Saltaire’s 150 year old homes by making them more energy efficient.
Saltaire Retrofit Reimagined has created a handbook for Saltaire residents who want to improve their comfort and energy use while protecting their listed home’s unique character.
It offers guidance on the best technical home insulation and energy advice for heritage homes.
Andrew Gardner, architect and director of Bradford-based Above Ground, said many residents love their historic homes but struggle to heat their home to an adequate level during winter.
Mr Gardner said: “Building regulations acknowledge the need for specialist advice when working on heritage buildings, one of our aims is to commission this advice and make it available as a resource for residents and the council.
“We are not suggesting major work needs to be done to each house, more a reset of what is considered normal practice when doing any work.”
He hopes the guidance will one day be linked to Government backed schemes for home improvements.
He added: “Generic guidance and solutions are being pushed via the internet or flyers - this with a steady stream of nightmare stories of home insulation gone wrong is undermining trust in information and the benefits.”
The project is looking for further funding to continue its work, including key skills workshops for lime plastering and wood fibre insulation.
