A MAN lured a love rival to a Bradford alleyway and, with an accomplice, beat him so severely that he broke his nose and jaw.
Bradford Crown Court heard that Aamir Khan behaved “wholly and truly out of character” as the victim had threatened to release a sex tape of Khan’s ex-girlfriend.
Prosecutor Sam Roxborough said the victim had been in a three-week relationship with the young woman at the end of 2019, which she then broke off to go back to Khan, her former boyfriend.
The victim was said to be “upset and annoyed” as the news had “come out of the blue”.
On January 20, 2020, he sent a message to the woman saying he had a sex tape that he was going to show to everyone.
However, he did not have any such tape and later acknowledged that he sent the message out of annoyance and frustration over the way the relationship had ended.
Mr Roxborough said: “He accepts that he sent it wanting her to feel scared, and that his actions were not acceptable.”
That same day he received a message from the woman asking to meet with him near Bradford College.
He did so and they walked together towards the Alhambra Theatre.
In a nearby alleyway, two men appeared and backed him up against a wall. He recognised one of them as Aamir Khan.
After being asked to hand over his baseball cap and mobile phone the victim was punched in the face by Khan and fell to the ground. He was then repeatedly punched and kicked by both men.
The attack continued until two passers-by intervened and chased away Khan and his accomplice, who remains unidentified.
The victim suffered a broken nose and jaw, plus a perforated eardrum, and underwent surgery to insert a plate in his jaw. He needed two operations to reset his nose.
Khan was arrested a month after the assault and identified by the victim. Khan later pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm, and to theft.
In a statement read to the court the victim said he had been left feeling suicidal following the attack and felt unsafe whenever he left his flat.
He said the assault had changed the structure of his face and that his nose was still broken despite two surgeries.
Mitigating, Shufqat Khan described the victim’s threat to release the sex tape as “the catalyst that led to this unsavoury incident occurring”.
He said Khan was of hitherto good character and that his reaction was due to a combination of his age – just 20 at the time – his upset, and his anger.
Addressing Khan, now 24, of North Park Road, Bradford, Mr Recorder Anthony Kelbrick said: “While it was very wrong and deeply unpleasant of [the victim] to threaten your [then girlfriend] with a false promise of revealing intimate photographs of her, what you did was far worse.
“You effectively conspired … to lure him to a secluded spot where you stole his phone and, to use a colloquialism, beat him up causing very significant physical and psychological injuries. He may never totally recover.”
He sentenced Khan to a total of two years imprisonment suspended for 18 months, ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, and imposed an 18-month restraining order preventing any contact with the victim.
