AS SCHOOLS go back this week after the long summer holiday we take a look at the opening of Addingham Middle School in 1979.
Pictured are the first intake of pupils at the £400,000 school, built on land off Back Beck Lane.
The school took in 160 children when it opened, around half of them from Ilkley, who were ferried to and from Addingham every day by bus.
The school closed 21 years later in July 2000 as part of a reorganisation of the education system in Bradford district.
As well as Addingham Middle, Burley Middle and Ilkley Middle also shut their doors for good at that time.
The move saw the area’s three-tier system replaced by a two-tier one - in effect eradicating middle schools.
