BRADFORD’S popular John Street Market opened in the 1930s, and nearly 40 years later it had a revamp.
In August 1969 the Telegraph & Argus reported “the rebuilding of John Street Market has been undertaken at a hot pace.
“Because of adverse weather, work on the scheme, at one stage at the end of April, was four weeks behind programme.”
A later report that month revealed that the market would be open six days a week, adding: “Happy to be back, on the former site, which has undergone an extraordinary transformation, are the stallholders.
“They adapted themselves well to the conditions on the temporary site at Lower Westgate but the place had obvious shortcomings.”
The new-look John Street Market, pictured here, included a modern frontage comprising several shops and a bank.
