THIS picture was taken in July 1919. It shows Keighley’s peace celebrations following the First World War, which included this procession of some 30 groups. Here, making their way down Cavendish Street, is Devonshire Street Congregational Sunday School’s symbolic The Task of Youth.
Girls from The Spirit of France also took part in the procession, which made its way to Victoria Park
When it came to the judging The Task of Youth won first prize. Second went to The Spirit of France, with Peaceful Old England coming third. Both were staged by an Empire Girls’ Club.
St Barnabas Church Sunday School entered Boudica, but too late to be considered for a prize. They were, however, allowed to take part in the procession.
Several people had no qualms about leaving their prams unattended as they joined the crowds to watch the spectacle.
The photograph was supplied by Mr Kevin Steaton, of Shann Lane, Keighley and first appeared in the Telegraph & Argus in 2008.
