GOOD Times continued at the Piece Hall last night, when the legendary Nile Rodgers & CHIC sprinkled their dancefloor magic across the historic venue.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers delivered a cracking set of floor-fillers to a delighted sold-out 6,000-strong crowd - with special guests, kitchen disco queen Sophie Ellis Bextor and 80 inspired pop act Deco getting the dance vibes underway.
The latest concert in Halifax's summer of live music - TK Maxx presents Live at The Piece Hall 2024 - was a fabulous, feelgood celebration of disco classics, fizzing with Rodgers' irresistible fusion of funk, soul, jazz, pop and hip-hop.
The Lifetime Achievement Grammy winner has worked with just about everybody, not least Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, David Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran, Jeff Beck, Daft Punk, Grace Jones, Lady Gaga and Beyonce.
Hit after hit from Nile's hugely impressive back catalogue came thick and fast, as he and the slick CHIC line-up worked their magic beneath a giant glitter ball.
A medley of Number 1 hits included I'm Coming Out, Upside Down, Greatest Dancer, We Are Family, Like a Virgin and Modern Love. Other highlights were Daft Punk's funk-tastic Get Lucky, Sister Sledge's sublime Lost in Music, CHIC's infectious disco anthems Le Freak, Everybody Dance and Good Times, Bowie's 'post disco' gem Let's Dance and the razor-sharp Notorious by Duran Duran - which Nile referred to as his "other band".
Along the way, Nile treated us to some sparkling vignettes from his glittering career, including a touching tribute to Bowie.
Each number had the sell-out crowd throwing shapes and singing along in the courtyard - turning the 18th century cloth hall into Yorkshire's biggest dancefloor. What a huge treat to see Nile Rodgers - genius musician, songwriter and producer, who has sold more than 500 million albums and 75 million singles worldwide - at work on stage, with the mighty CHIC Organization delivering sublime vocals and musicianship.
The result of England's first Euros 2024 match flashed up on stage, a reminder that there was something else going on last night. But we were Lost in Music - who needs football when the world's best disco is in town?
Warming up the stage was the fabulous Sophie Ellis Bextor, bringing her much-loved kitchen disco to the Piece Hall.
A vision in hot pink, Sophie got the crowd into the groove with a sassy set that included Take Me Home, Crying at The Discotheque and Murder on The Dancefloor. A class act.
And opening the night were brilliant viral pop sensations Deco.
* TK Maxx presents Live at The Piece Hall has already broken records for ticket sales, with more than 170,000 tickets sold across the series.
The live music programme continues on Wednesday, June 19 with Crowded House.
