POLICE have confirmed a person died on the railway tracks earlier today. 

Several train services are being cancelled this lunchtime as emergency services deal with a situation on the lines between Bradford Interchange and Sowerby Bridge Railway Station.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said officers were called to a report of a casualty on the tracks, near Copley in Halifax, just after 11.30am. 

"Officers and paramedics attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead," the spokesperson added. 

"The incident  is not thought to be suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it sent resources to the scene.

Northern Rail said just before midday that all lines between Bradford Interchange and Sowerby Bridge Railway Station are blocked.

A spokesperson for the train operator said: "Train services running through these stations will be cancelled or delayed."

The following train services are unable to run between Bradford Interchange and Sowerby Bridge Railway Station, in both directions:

  • Leeds - Manchester Victoria/Wigan Wallgate via Brighouse
  • Leeds - Manchester Victoria/Chester via Bradford Interchange
  • York - Blackpool North
  • Halifax - Hull
  • Bradford Interchange - Huddersfield

The 9.49am train from Wigan Wallgate to Leeds is delayed at Sowerby Bridge, while the 10.23am service from York to Blackpool terminated at Halifax, according to Northern Rail.

A spokesperson for the train operator said: "Ticket acceptance in place with Transpennine Express between York and Manchester.

"Any ticket restrictions have been lifted during this disruption."

Road transport has been requested to operate between Hebden Bridge and Bradford Interchange.
