THE SEARCH for the best fish and chip shop in the Bradford area has got off to a superb start - with readers reacting with enthusiasm to the competition.

More than 1,000 nominations have been received so far from Telegraph & Argus readers - and there's still time for more to come in.

To celebrate National Fish & Chip Day on June 6, the T&A launched a competition on Monday morning which will crown the Bradford area's 'Best Chippy 2024', urging readers to help decide the winner.

Telegraph & Argus readers can nominate their favourite fish & chip shop in the district via an online voting platform.

Online nominations will run until Sunday, May 26, with the ten finalists being revealed on Monday, June 3.

Readers will then be able vote for their ‘Best Chippy 2024’ by picking up copies of the Telegraph & Argus between June 3 and June 15 and - with the winner announced on June 24.

Reacting to the fact that 1,021 nominations had been received by 3pm on Tuesday, Nigel Burton, Telegraph & Argus editor, said: “I'm delighted by the initial response to the competition - and people still have until Sunday to make a nomination online.

"We always sensed the people of the Bradford district were passionate about their local chippy. To receive more than 1,000 nominations in just over a day is proof of that.

"It's great to see that so many people across our patch are keen to help us recognise and celebrate the fabulous friers in our communities.

"If you haven't got a nomination in yet, what are you waiting for? Get voting now!”

Readers are reminded that their nominations will not count if they do not use the online form. A number of comments naming popular fish and chip shops were left under the original Facebook post. Sadly, these will not be taken into account.

The nominations so far have included a wide variety of locations, including shops in inner city areas and also in outlying communities.

It's further evidence that you'd do well to find a Bradford suburb that doesn't have easy access to a chippy.

We’ll be bringing you updates on the chippies nominated in our competition – so keep an eye out and see if your favourite is featured."
