A RECORD crowd attended this year's Bradford Super Soapbox Challenge, it has been revealed.

Crowds of over 18,000 descended onto city centre streets to watch a whole host of wacky karts race around the tricky track.

This year’s event was opened by Danny Malin - of the popular YouTube channel Rate My Takeaway.

From Kirkgate, the contenders hurtled down Bank Street before crossing the finishing line on Tyrell Street.

With each team given three laps, there were plenty of crashes and blunders to keep the huge audience entertained.

A final top 10 was then assembled from the fastest teams - which then got the chance to go again.

It was The Batmobile with Batman Innit (30.75) that came out in first place following the hotly-contested last run.

The handmade kart managed to narrowly edge the excellently engineered Burnley-based Safran Speedsters (31.50).

Excitement is already building for next year's event with those thinking about competing encouraged to apply.

The event has become a major Bank Holiday attraction for the city.
