WORK is underway to install solar panels on the roof of the University of Bradford in a multi-million project aimed at making the campus more environmentally-friendly.

The work is taking place at the JB Priestley Library and Student Central buildings under a £3.3million project.

The installation of the solar panels, which will be carried out throughout April and May, is part of a Government-backed project to help the university bring down carbon emissions.

Professor Shirley Congdon, vice-chancellor of the University of Bradford, said: "Along with other public bodies universities have a vital role in decarbonisation.

"Decarbonisation also plays a part in attracting staff and students.

"According to Universities UK, 91 per cent of students wanting their place of study to actively take action and with 74 per cent of international students saying that how seriously the university takes global and environmental issues is most likely to influence their choice of institution.

"This means we must continue to take a more strategic and whole system approach to de-carbonisation."

Other work being carried out at the university as part of the £3.3m project will include an upgrading of the heating systems at the JB Priestley Library and Student Central buildings.

A new ventilation system will also be installed in the library.
