THE Northern Lights may be visible across parts of the country tonight.

According to the Met Office, a geomagnetic storm will give an "enhanced chance of aurora activity" this evening.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "The Northern Lights may be visible across Scotland, as well as Northern Ireland and parts of northern England with clear spells to start, before turning cloudier from the west later."

The spokesperson said the Northern Lights appear as large areas of colour, including shades of red, pale green, pink, yellow, blue and violet, in the direction due north.

The spectacle is best seen in darkness, away from any light pollution.

The Northern Lights result from collisions of charged particles in the solar wind colliding with molecules in the Earth's upper atmosphere, according to the Met Office.
