A WELL-known driving instructor has died aged 57 after a short battle against cancer.

Gary McDonald was diagnosed with stomach cancer in December.

He was a self-employed driving instructor, with No L School of Motoring, for over two decades.

His wife of nearly 30 years, Laura Campbell, said: "We are all in shock.

"Gary initially just had a cough, he didn't even feel ill. Numerous tests were carried out – beginning with the lungs, then the heart – and they finally found the stomach cancer. He was diagnosed on my 60th birthday.

"It was then all so quick, just four months from start to end.

"Gary was a wonderful driving instructor who was much loved. He changed so many young people’s lives – hundreds of drivers on our roads now are there because of him."

Mr McDonald, from Harden, was also a member of Keighley Playhouse and Bingley Little Theatre.

His funeral service will take place at St Saviour's Church, in Harden, on May 2, at noon, followed by burial at Haworth – "his favourite place", said Laura.

He leaves Laura, a teenage son Fraser, and a sister Tracy. He was also a brother-in-law and uncle.

Touching tributes have been left to Mr McDonald - who was described as an "amazing man" - from those who were taught by him.

One former student spoke of her devastation and how it was Mr McDonald who helped her to pass after years of trying.

Sherralee Doherty said: "Oh my! Gary was my driving instructor. I nearly gave up on learning.

"After over four driving instructors and four years of trying."

She added: "He's the one person who stuck with me and actually made learning fun and finally got me to pass first time.

"Absolutely devastated. Rest in peace you legend.

"Thinking of his family and friends."

Carolyn Alderson added: "I'm so sorry to hear this. He was my instructor and he taught me so well.

"Condolences to his family. Rest in eternal peace, Gary."

And Jane Hudson said: "One of the best. RIP Gary."

Stephanie Alice wrote: "Such upsetting news! Gary was an amazing man and had the patience of a saint with me and got me through my driving.

"Sending love to his family, who he spoke about all the time on our lessons."

Leanne Gee added: "Gary was the most perfect instructor he brought my confidence out such an amazing man."
