NEARLY 200 people have enjoyed free tickets to shows at town halls across a district thanks to a new scheme where people have been paying it forward.

Kirklees Council launched its "Pay it Forward" fund last September, where anyone buying tickets for events at the local authority's town halls has the option to add a donation, which then goes into a pot for disadvantaged people to benefit from.

Since the scheme started, £2,740 has been raised.

This has meant almost 200 people who would not usually have access to live performances have been able to attend a range of entertainment events in the past six months.

Carmen Taylor, from mental health and wellbeing charity Support to Recovery, said: “Tickets from the Pay It Forward Fund go to families we work with through our community anchor work, who are living with hardship or have difficulty accessing family-based activities.

“This fund offers families the opportunity to enjoy live entertainment they otherwise could not afford; spend quality time together; and enjoy the remarkable interiors of our town halls.

"It is a wonderful gift from Kirklees audience members who are enriching lives by choosing to help others.”

Richard Parry, Strategic Director for Adults and Health, said: “The generous donations from our audiences are enabling people in our community who may face barriers, either financial or social, to experience the joy of live entertainment and create happy memories.

“We are committed to making our shows accessible to everyone.

"In addition to our range of affordable ticket options and concessions, this new scheme allows even more people to enjoy shows at our town halls.

“I would like to thank all who have donated so far and the community groups we are working with to bring joy to local families.”

The Spring/Summer programme is now on sale and includes a wonderful selection of shows for all tastes.

There are family films, a disco for grown-ups, stand-up comedy, a Bollywood celebration, quality tribute nights, orchestral concerts, and even a night of world-class snooker.

Anyone who would like to donate as part of their ticket transaction can do so in person at any Kirklees Town Hall box office, on the phone on 01484 225755, or online at: kirkleestownhalls.co.uk

You can also put into the fund through a cash donation box in the Town Hall bars.
