LATEST NEWS: Old college building involved in vicious fire is now unsafe and arson is suspected

A FEROCIOUS fire took over a former school building last night.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) was called to reports of a derelict building fire in Birkdale Road, Dewsbury at 10.51pm on Easter Monday.

Ten fire crews rushed to the scene, from Dewsbury, Ossett, Morley, Hunslet, Wakefield, and Rastrick stations.

A spokesperson for WYFRS said the upper floors and roof of the building was alight, covering an area of roughly 60 metres by 30 metres.

Footage seen by the Telegraph & Argus shows a vicious fire underway, with large flames at the top of the building, an orange glow emanating from the upper floor windows, and a thick plume of smoke rising from the property.

Firefighters used two aerial appliances, four large jets, one hose reel, and one ground monitor to extinguish the blaze.

The WYFRS spokesperson said: "There were no persons involved in the incident."

The incident is still listed as "ongoing" on the WYFRS website.

The T&A has contacted West Yorkshire Police for comment.
