THE council has revealed major pedestrianisation of streets in Bradford city centre will start in a fortnight as the next phase of works begins.

The huge transformation will see improvements in the core of Bradford city centre and reshape it around those on foot and bikes.

More green and public spaces are being created with designs that are easier, safer, and more pleasant for people to spend time in and around.

Phase one of construction work is now nearly complete.

Phase one focused on works around the edge of the city centre including on Croft Street, Jacobs Well, Prince’s Way, Godwin Street, Lower Kirkgate, Church Bank, Well Street and Vicar Lane.

These works were to enable bus services to move onto new public transport routes which go around the core of the city centre, rather than through it.

Phase two of the work is scheduled to start from Sunday, April 14.

This phase includes the removal of traffic management, such as cones and barriers, from the completed works just outside the city centre.

It also marks the start of work to pedestrianise Bank Street, Market Street, Hall Ings and parts of Bridge Street and Little Horton Lane.

The rerouting of buses onto the new public transport corridors around the city centre will officially start on Sunday, April 14.

There will also be changes to taxi ranks and disabled parking spaces.

The rerouting of buses does mean a new timetable and stops for buses into and out of the city centre.

Bradford Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority are working in partnership on this £43 million scheme, which is being delivered through the Combined Authority’s Transforming Cities Fund programme.

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said: “As we move into the next phase of construction, people will now begin to see this transformation become a reality.

“With traffic-free greenspaces being created to make the city centre a safer, easier and more pleasant place for people to spend time and to get around on foot or by bike.

“While these works are taking place, disruption to both drivers and pedestrians is inevitable, but we can assure people that this is monitored daily, and every effort is being made to minimise disruption wherever possible. I’d like to thank people for their patience while this work takes place.”
