A man has been arrested in connection to an incident which forced police to close a major route through Leeds city centre.

West Yorkshire Police blocked the A58 Inner Ring Road after an altercation reportedly unfolded.

The incident took place at around 10.10am on Sunday, March 24.

The force said officers were called out to deal with a report of an altercation, involving a man who was then located "on the wrong side of the railings of the Great George Street footbridge" over the ring road.

The road was closed in both directions and trained negotiators were deployed to the scene.

The man was brought to safety shortly after noon and the road reopened, police said.

David Upton, 33, of no fixed address, was charged with causing a public nuisance and a public order offence.

He has been bailed to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court on April 10.
