A SECTION of the M62 is closed both ways this morning following a serious multiple-vehicle crash overnight.

The serious crash, involving multiple vehicles took place between Junction 22 (Rishworth Moor) and Junction 24 (Ainley Top).

The incident happened near Scammonden Reservoir and the nearby distinctive bridge crossing the motorway.

When the Telegraph & Argus visited the scene at 7.45am this morning, major police investigation work was taking place and it was clear the road would be closed for some time.

Two very badly damaged vehicles were the centre of police attention.

One had come to rest near the central reservation while the other was 75 metres away straddling lanes 1 and 2 of the westbound carriageway.

According to one traffic alert, the "M62 both ways is closed due to accident investigation work between Junction 22 A672 (Rishworth Moor) and Junction 24 A629 (Ainley Top).

"There is congestion to the A672 Oldham Road towards Ripponden as traffic diverts following a serious multi vehicle crash just after 2am Saturday morning."
