SEVERAL prolific shoplifters in Bradford were arrested during a week of police action.

Over 140 police officers and PCSOs were deployed in the increased patrols at some of the main retail centres across West Yorkshire last week.

A total of 37 arrests were made for theft offences during the Safer Business Action Days as officers linked up with partners including Business Improvement District (BID) staff and store security.

In Bradford, retailers were visited and advised on how best to report thefts.

A number of offences were detected as businesses were encouraged to report retail crime.

Superintendent James Troisi, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “Retail crime has drawn an increased focus in recent months, so the week of action provided a valuable opportunity for us to work closely with shops and partners to find a sustainable solution to the issue.

“Another of our aims was to increase visibility with patrols so that we could provide deterrence. It’s important for us to work together to disrupt and deter the actions of would-be offenders.

“Having an increased presence in our town and city centres not only helps to reduce potential offending but also allows officers to make enquiries, identify offenders and arrest those found committing offences.”
