POLICE have issued a warning to drivers after a spate of vehicle thefts in the past month.

West Yorkshire Police say the thefts have mostly been "crimes of opportunity".

Officers have told motorists to "remove all your valuable items from your vehicle" and "do not leave keys in your car".

A post on the West Yorkshire Police - Halifax Facebook page read: "We’ve had several reports of motor vehicle theft and theft from motor vehicles come in this past month across Calderdale.

"Most of these thefts have been “crimes of opportunity” -- this means that a suspect is checking vehicles for unlocked doors, but passing by those that are locked and secured.

"Help us keep your property safe -- please remember to remove all your valuable items from your vehicle, do not leave your keys in your car, remove loose change and yes…. even a pound coin is enough for them to break into your car.

"Please lock your vehicles when they are parked."
