A DRIVER who was killed in a crash on the M62 has been named locally as a Bradford man - as heartfelt tributes pour in for him. 

Emergency services were called to the scene of the collision, which happened on the eastbound carriageway close to junction 29, for Lofthouse, at around 3.30am yesterday.

West Yorkshire Police said the crash involved a white Audi A3 "travelling against the flow of traffic" and a Renault HGV.

The male occupant of the Audi was confirmed dead at the scene a short time later.

He has now been named locally as Shahid Ali, a 37-year-old from Bradford.

Touching tributes have been paid to him on social media.

Underneath a notification post by Janaza Announcements, one person said: "He was full of love and respect, always spoke beautiful words. 

"You will be missed Ganz."

Another person commented: "An absolute shock.

"Shahid had a big heart and put a smile on everyone's face.

"A great brother, friend and work colleague."

"Extremely upsetting news, a good old school friend," said another.

Others expressed their condolences to his loved ones.

"Very sad outcome, my condolences to his family," said one woman on social media.

The eastbound section of the M62 was shut between junction 28, for Leeds, and junction 29 for most of the the day to allow collision investigation work to take place.

It is now fully open. 

What police have said

A police spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on the M62 on Saturday morning.

"Emergency services were called to the scene of the collision, which happened on the eastbound carriageway close to junction 29, for Lofthouse, at around 3.30am.

"The collision involved a white Audi A3 travelling against the flow of traffic and a Renault HGV.

"The male occupant of the Audi was confirmed dead at the scene a short time later.

"A road closure was in place while collision investigators establish exactly what happened.

"Officers from the major collision enquiry team are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the manner of driving of the Audi prior to the collision.
