WEST Yorkshire Police have issued advice for Volkswagen (VW) drivers after a series of thefts.

It comes following an increase in thefts of multimedia/centre console units from VW vehicles in the Calderdale area.

Officers have been leafleting VW vehicles in Halifax in recent days.

A letter from Calderdale Crime Prevention Officers Jill Pilling and Tracy Hanson read: "Dear Volkswagen Owner - Passat/Tiguan/Golf/Polo

"I hope this letter finds you well. We are writing to inform you of recent security incidents that have come to our attention. The purpose of this letter is to ensure Calderdale residents are aware of the situation and can take the necessary precautions.

"We regret to inform you that several VW vehicles equipped with media systems have been subject to thefts of their media systems.

"These unfortunate incidents have occurred in our Community and we want to ensure Calderdale residents are aware and to be vigilant."

It added: "The safety and security of your VW vehicle is of the utmost importance to us and we will work diligently to apprehend the offenders."

Tips to safeguard your VW vehicle and its media system

  • Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
  • Lock your vehicle.
  • Activate alarm systems by double-clicking your fob.
  • The offenders are mainly smashing the passenger front side window so if possible park your vehicle so this has restricted access.
  • A motion-activated dash cam which alerts you when someone is nearby.
  • Maybe think about getting some motion-activated CCTV overlooking your vehicle.
  • Secure your valuables - leave nothing on show
  • Report suspicious activity to 101 as soon as possible, however, if the crime is ongoing ring 999
  • Speak to your Volkswagen Dealer to see if there are any further aftermarket security products available.
