A COMMEMORATIVE event held in a Bradford district village remembered victims who have lost their lives in the conflict between Israel and Gaza.

Based on the last poem written by poet Dr Refaat Alareer, the West Lane Baptist Church in Haworth, in conjunction with Churches Together, hosted a well-attended commemorative and fundraising event.

One of the event organisers said: “This indoor/outdoor event linked our wonderful village of Haworth with Gaza, by remembering some of the writers, poets, artists and journalists who have lost their lives in the conflict.”

The writers and poets remembered included Dr Refaat Alareer and Heba Abu Nada, artists Heba Zagout and Mohammed Sami and journalists Salam Mema and Yousef Maher Dawas. At the pop-up Cafe Palestina, attendees enjoyed cake and a cuppa, had a go on the Tombola, took part in a quiz, listened to storytelling, poetry and singing and did a peace meditation. Children decorated peace doves and made tiny angels.

The organiser said: “Braving the rain, we walked to the Book Stones with the ‘Brontë sisters’ to fly a white kite over Penistone Hill, representing an angel flying over Gaza bringing back love, bringing back hope.
